Mermaids in My Art Journal

This summer I decided that I would focus on developing stronger technical skills in my art-making so I've been slowing working my way through Suzi Blu's drawing classes and working my way through my favorite technique books. (Which is one of the many reasons why my blog has suffered so. The other 6  no 7 reasons live with me and require food and clean clothes.)

Here is a sweet mermaid that I recently completed in my mongo-huge art journal. Closed, it measures 11 inches wide so when I have it opened to a two-page spread, I have 22 glorious inches of space. I found it at Hobby Lobby on sale for a song. (True! All I had to do was belt out Jar of Hearts and it was mine! hahaha. I know...I know...) The color scheme is based on Kristin's Summer of Color. The background colors are from her first challenge and the mermaid colors are from her second. I never quite got around to linking everything.

This mermaid is a prototype for a large piece that I have brewing in my noggin for Dani's (11 y/o) bedroom. She recently settled on a sea theme for her room and I thought that a beautiful mermaid painting would be perfect. I have a bit of work to do on the body, but I'm happy with the wild hair. (What is my obsession with untamed hair?)

As for technique book work, right now I'm focused on Judy Wise and Stephanie Lee's wonderful Plaster Studio. The moment I opened Plaster Studio, I knew that I wanted to learn from these women. The talent. I'm all drooly thinking about it. I've got quite a few pieces in the works, but nothing completed...yet. It has been so fun to experiment with using joint compound and encaustic. I'm planning a little tutorial/video for later this month. I just need to get a new tripod before I can film again. A certain young man tragically broke my last one. (I think it was used for some sort of saving-of-the-universe-scenario so at least it died a hero's death.)

Anyway, I hope that your summer is going well. I only have about 3 weeks left before the start of school so my posting will be spotty for a little bit longer. I want to soak up my sweeties as much as possible before I have to drop them off at school again. I'll have 4 in full-time school this year and 1 in morning preschool twice a week. It is going to be a very different year for me. My brood is growing up. Sigh...
