Cake Disasters and Lessons Learned

For E's cake this year, I had a vision. I just knew what I wanted to do. I decided on a sky theme. And wanted to do it right so I greased the pans, lined them with parchment paper. I know, parchment paper! I food-colored dollops of cake batter and dropped them into the pans to bake. I set the timer and the two halves turned out perfect! (Well, the purple was a little grey, but really, I'm not picky.)

I trimmed the bulges off and placed all the scraps in a pile. This attracted the beggar children and they requested samples. Because I was chatting on the phone and icing at the same time, without looking at their little faces, I pointed to the perfect cake pieces and said, "Do not eat these, you can eat anything in this pile (pointing to the direction of the scraps.)" Well, apparently my message did not get through because the next moment I looked over and saw C's fist pulling, no ripping, the edge of the forbidden cake. E had already munched the opposite side.

I guess I should have been a bit more explicit in my directions and made sure that they were listening. But, dear reader, do not despair. All was not lost. Since I was taught at a young age the glory of modification, I simply took a few of the remaining scraps (that hadn't been touched by the beggars' hands) and shoved them into the missing areas. The cake looked like this when I was finished.

And with a bit of icing, everyone was all smiles.

Yet, this story is not over! When I went to the pantry to find the 2 candles. I only needed 2, is that so hard? I only found 1.

Dang it.

Luckily, D is a gifted artist and also has been taught the glory of modification. She whipped up another candle in 3 minutes flat. Whew.

Now back to the sky theme, the inside was a rainbow while the outside was light blue with fluffy white clouds. After I served myself a piece, the pattern was apparent to the rest of the family.

(I just can't figure out why I can't shed this excess baby weight...hmmm...)

And they all ate happily ever after.

I cringed through the first half of the story as I kept reliving that moment when I heard you shriek over the phone...I feel slightly responsible for this mishap :)

However, it turned out LOVELY and so clever! Tell D that her candle is the crowning touch :)

Where are all those candles you've been saving over the years? Please don't tell me you threw them out because of my playful mockery of your stash of used birthday candles.....I would feel just horrible!
