Bad Girls Just Don't Fit in the Box

I completed the following layout for a challenge at Bad Girls. They are doing a scraplift-a-day for the entire month of July so I only had 24 hours to complete my layout. I found the time limit to be stressful because there wasn't any room for error, but somehow I pulled it off. The rules were that we needed to explain what Bad Girls means to us, use our own picture, and to do a 12x12 layout based on the artist immediately before us.

Techniques: I stamped the background using the bottom of an acrylic paint bottle and black acrylic paint. The body is a photocopy of a model in a Vogue magazine. The aqua square is made of masking tape with an acrylic color wash.

This is what the background looked like immediately after I completed it. You can see the paint bottle that I used as a stamp to the left. (I also used this layout as my second assignment for my acrylic paint class at Scrap Friends.)

This was a symbolic layout for me because inside the box I wrote expectations women are given as homemakers. For example, I wrote about how we are expected to always look tidy, keep our homes clean, cook everything from scratch, wear the latest fashions while keeping a tight budget, vacuum in pearls, etc. Some of these statements are obviously outdated, but I wanted to show that women are more than those expectations and that art (the whole Bad Girls idea) is a vehicle for us to express our individuality.

I am wearing an apron, a symbol for domesticity, because I want to show that I've happily chosen the life of a mother and homemaker, but I haven't embraced the self-depreciating expectations that surround me. I am out-of-the-box and have much to offer. If that is what makes me a Bad Girl, so be it!
